In the Interest of Time presents work by seven artists with ties to Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky who investigate the relationship of their subject matter to time, moving beyond the conventional wisdom that a photograph captures a single moment of truth.

Joe Vitone photographs family in and around Akron, Ohio, and Lynn Whitney documents Lake Erie over the course of years, revealing insights through duration and accumulation. Osamu James Nakagawa creates images of land once used as Japanese American incarceration camps during World War II, ensuring this history is not lost to time. Robyn Moore employs visual metaphor to represent deep time, geological forces so slow they are imperceptible to humans. Jordanne Renner photographed her family home in 2003. She revisits the images 23 years later with her father and stepbrother, adding layers of memory. Inspired by horror movies, Julie Renée Jones’ installation reflects on how motherhood has altered her sense of time. And Elijah Howe combines contemporary photographs and archival images of the small town of Chained Rock, Kentucky to create an historical narrative that encourages viewers to question documentary truth.

In the Interest of Time, curated by Theresa Bembnister, Independent Curator, is a Featured Exhibition for the 2026 FotoFocus Biennial: The Long View. Now in its eighth iteration, the Biennial activates over 70 exhibitions at museums, galleries, universities, and public spaces throughout Greater Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Northern Kentucky in October—the largest of its kind in America. The Long View theme considers aspects of time and perspective in photography and film, and how these mediums shape our understanding of the world.
