Summer Resident Artist: Harry Sanchez
Harry Sanchez, originally from El Paso, Texas and recently an MFA graduate from UC DAAP, is a multi-media artist who uses printmaking, installation, sculpture and pastry tips to create his work. Deeply inspired by concepts of borders -both real and psychological, he questions the polarity of the world we live in today. His works explore notions of prisoner torture, whistleblowers, police brutality, and deportation. Sanchez is quick to point out his path to an artist isn’t what you might expect. Over the years he has had a variety of manual labor jobs and was a football player in college. It was the cake and cupcake business he started with his mother that cemented his passion for art. The techniques he learned decorating cakes became one of his techniques, substituting oil paint for frosting and canvas for sheet cake. Sanchez’s work has been exhibited in Cincinnati, Seattle, Dallas, and Paris, France at the Louvre and he has recently completed a curatorial residency.
So don’t miss the change this summer to visit Harry Sanchez, Jr. our first artist- in residence and create some art–without a cost or ticket!
