Over-the-Rhine International Film Festival organized by LADD and the Contemporary Arts Center will present a retrospective film screening and discussion celebrating the life and work of Oscar-winning director Julia Reichert.
Steven Bognar, Reichert’s husband, and filmmaking partner, will lead the event, titled “Julia Reichert: Pioneering Indie Filmmaker” that focuses on Reichert’s life and her films that often-explored themes of race, class and gender, often in the Midwest. Reichert died on December 1, 2022, at the age of 76 from cancer.
The screening portion of the evening, taking place at the CAC, will include three short films that together explore Reichert’s origins as a documentary filmmaker, her life outside of filmmaking and a tribute to her created after her passing. “Julia’s Stepping Stones,” a 30-minute documentary that tells Reichert’s origin as a documentary filmmaker using archival footage and photos, will premiere at the event.
Following the screenings, Over-the-Rhine International Film Festival artistic director tt stern-enzi will join Bognar on stage to discuss Reichert’s life and impact on documentary filmmaking.
