Architectural Abstractions III: Scaled Collages

Architects and designers use collage to conceptualize their designs. Designers also use collage as quick a way to represent a project by showing an atmosphere, mood, material concept, scenery, or environment. We can imagine and understand scale through the use of collage as well.

In Abstraction III, visitors will use collage to study conceptual models. Participants will imagine a scene or site for the designs, and also consider various potential scales. What happens if the models are the size of a skyscraper? What if they are the scale of a house, or bus stop, or even a chair? The collages will allow visitors to study potential environments, sites, or atmospheres that the designs might be located in.

Architectural Abstractions includes a series of projects inspired by the 20th anniversary of the CAC building, as well as the design process and architectural work of Zaha Hadid. Led by Lauren Whitehurst, of Built Lab Architecture and Design, participants will create drawings, models, and collages to explore architectural concepts and ideas. Each month during the Co-Lab series will center on different abstract projects that will work in series and build upon one another. Join us for a unique, collaborative design-through-making experience on any or all of the dates.

Lauren Whitehurst is an architect and designer focused on teaching and practice. She is particularly interested in the continually evolving dialogue between the conceptual and professional realms of architecture and interior design. Her practice with design firms across the country has provided her with extensive experience in all phases of design from initial project conception through construction completion. This professional experience is contrasted with her time spent teaching design students at the University of Cincinnati at DAAP. Lauren's ongoing critical practice as a Co-founder of Built Lab allows her to explore her interests in design at the intersection of conceptual and real.

This free program is designed for participants of all ages and takes place on the third Saturday of each month from 2-4pm in the CAC's sixth floor studio space.

The Co-LAB program is generously supported by ArtsWave.
