Architects and designers draw inspiration from a variety of sources and often use painting as a means of studying ideas. Zaha Hadid created a series of paintings for many of her projects, including the CAC. These paintings were used as a way of thinking abstractly about a concept or design, often drawing inspiration from Suprematist painters from the early 1900's. Hadid was specifically captured by the work of Kazimir Malevich.
In Abstraction I, participants will create their own versions of abstract paintings, drawing inspiration from artists like El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy, and Kazimir Malevich. Visitors will learn about concepts of form, composition, positive and negative space, and color theory.
Architectural Abstractions includes a series of projects inspired by the 20th anniversary of the CAC building, as well as the design process and architectural work of Zaha Hadid. Led by Lauren Whitehurst, of Built Lab Architecture and Design, participants will create drawings, models, and collages to explore architectural concepts and ideas. Each month during the Co-Lab series will center on different abstract projects that will work in series and build upon one another. Join us for a unique, collaborative design-through-making experience on any or all of the dates.
Lauren Whitehurst is an architect and designer focused on teaching and practice. She is particularly interested in the continually evolving dialogue between the conceptual and professional realms of architecture and interior design. Her practice with design firms across the country has provided her with extensive experience in all phases of design from initial project conception through construction completion. This professional experience is contrasted with her time spent teaching design students at the University of Cincinnati at DAAP. Lauren's ongoing critical practice as a Co-founder of Built Lab allows her to explore her interests in design at the intersection of conceptual and real.
This free program is designed for participants of all ages and takes place on the third Saturday of each month from 2-4pm in the CAC's sixth floor studio space.
