With tUnE-yArDs, Merrill Garbus introduces a way of converting basic beats (A snare crack! A stick clack!), deceptively simple vocal loops and a few instruments into a pocket orchestra. tUnE-yArDs grounds its sound in tangible, instantly gratifying techniques; this music is made by human hands and possessed of a distinctly human touch; created piecemeal, smashed apart wholly, then reassembled tenderly, gaining complexity as the layers stack up.

Ms. Garbus’s love of rhythm has her touch on parade drumming, African pygmy polyphony, 1980s hip-hop, samba, Joni Mitchell and rural blues. When her voice is hopping through her melodies over an Afro-Caribbean groove, she can sound like a collaboration by Dave Matthews, Bjork, Angelique Kidjo and M.I.A. Live, her songs can be turned into anthems, causing the audience to stomp wildly, scream alongside her and sing out her lyrics of personal liberation with perfect harmony.

“It isn’t likely that there will be music this year that is more infused with the spirit of celebration and physical movement.” – The New Yorker
