The CAC is proud to open a call for submissions for the next Kaplan Hall Lobby installation, opening April 28. Celebrated conceptual artist and pedagogue, Luis Camnitzer (b. 1937, Germany) presents a series of posters depicting proposals for monuments to under-recognized heroes.
The image usually associated with the word “hero” is of a male in military garb. Monuments celebrate individuals perceived as having done a significant service, too often in dubious causes, for powerful interests. Yet, most heroic acts are anonymous and performed as help to fellow citizens, often with implications that call into question the legitimacy of those financing monuments.
This project is designed to fill a cultural gap and celebrate those members of society who are not memorialized in spite of being indispensable to check abuses of power, nurse our mental and physical health, and in general help maintain our well-being as a species in a livable environment.
Organized by artist and educator, Luis Camnitzer, the first call took place in June 2020 and the results were exhibited virtually by the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This second call is organized by the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) in Cincinnati, and by the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (MAMM). Submissions will be selected and printed to be physically shown in sponsored spaces. (*)
In case of interest, submit proposals completing the title “Monument to the Unknown ________” under the image, in U.S. letter size. Please scan all works on a flatbed scanner at 600 dpi, or export a digital file as a JPEG at 600 dpi in U. S. letter size dimensions. Submit no later than March 31, 2023.
(*) CAC will exhibit selected submitted works in the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati. MAMM will organize a series of exhibits in schools of Medellín institutions and assign the topic for student work. Prints will be destroyed after being exhibited. Images may be used for publicity purposes.
