The unexpected death in March of renowned architect Zaha Hadid has brought her enormous influence on the global architectural community into sharp focus.

This weekend, the celebration of the Iraqi-born, British architect’s work turns to Cincinnati, where her career took off after the opening of the Lois and Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art, home of the Contemporary Arts Center.

The CAC, which opened in May 2003, was Zaha Hadid’s first completed project in the U.S. and one of the first of her projects to be built anywhere, although she was widely admired around the globe as a thought leader in architecture. In 2004, she became the first woman to win architecture’s Pritzker Prize, the first of much worldwide recognition to come. She died at a Miami Hospital, at age 65, after suffering a heart attack while being treated for bronchitis.
