Contemporary Arts Center to Receive National Endowment for the Arts Grant
Award is Among 1,023 Made Nationally
(Cincinnati, OH)— Through its grant-making to thousands of nonprofits each year, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) promotes opportunities for people in communities across America to experience the arts and exercise their creativity. In the second major grant announcement of the 2015 fiscal year, the NEA will make a $50,000 award to Contemporary Arts Center to support a major survey exhibition of celebrated Korean-American artist Do Ho Suh in 2016. The CAC will also produce the first catalog on the artist to be conceptualized and designed in the U.S. The NEA will make 1,023 awards totaling $74.3 million nationwide in this funding round.
NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, “The NEA is committed to advancing learning, fueling creativity, and celebrating the arts in cities and towns across the United States. Funding these new projects like the one from Contemporary Arts Center represents an investment in both local communities and our nation’s creative vitality.” Raphaela Platow, Director of the Contemporary Arts Center added, “We are delighted to have received this recognition from the NEA, it is a true vote of confidence to the quality of our curatorial program and the continued strength of this institution, as one of the oldest non-collecting contemporary art institutions in the country.”
Do Ho Suh: Passage, curated by Steven Matijcio, will be on view from February 12 through September 11, 2016. The CAC will present a number of Suh’s iconic installations in the exhibition, highlighting hallucinatory structures as metaphors for the struggle of all people to reformulate historical notions of settlement. Suh moved to the United States in 1993 and every house he has lived in throughout his life serves as inspiration for remarkable meditations on the legacy of home, place and migration. Each abode becomes manifest in an ongoing series of life-size fabric replicas that float gently but vividly in space - hovering like constructions of the mind. Suh’s work is intensely responsive to site, and in Passage he will propose a groundbreaking dialog with the now iconic architecture of Zaha Hadid - spoken through the movement of bodies through space.
