Based in Greater Cincinnati, Batres Gilvin is an art collaborative made up of members Bradly Gilvin and Karla Batres Gilvin. The couple met while studying at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and later formed their collaborative while pursuing MFAs at the University of Cincinnati’s College of DAAP. The artists, educators, and community arts facilitators employ a multidisciplinary approach to art making by playfully combining techniques such as collage, assemblage and installation. Their artwork examines the hybridity, duality and polarization visible in their experience as a multiethnic team by colorfully utilizing iconography related to Mexican and American culture.

Batres Gilivn’s residency will explore the concept of “Capirotada'', where the heavy becomes light-hearted. The residency will include projects/themes such as making a reclamation piñata, assembling a nicho to a metaphorical death, elevating the ordinary through arrangement, exploring what is lost + gained through translation, and creating your own “Capirotada'' recipe.
