Baroque music meets vogue ballroom culture.

Frédéric Nauczyciel is a French artist who works between Paris and the United States. Nauczyciel uses photography, video and performance while drawing inspiration from dance, cinema and American photography. In collaboration with the CAC and the CSO, Nauczyciel expands on his film-performance series House of HMU to devise an immersive experience that invites the audience into vogue ballroom culture.

With roots dating back to the Harlem Renaissance, voguing culture is defined by its celebration of femininity in the African American transgender community. Sharing certain artistic structures with the Baroque period, the House of HMU performance creates a path to explore juxtapositions between Baroque music, ballroom culture and the street culture of contemporary marching bands. Artists from Paris, Baltimore and Cincinnati perform alongside symphony musicians to transform the concert form and the stage into an area of accidental proximity.
