Direct Path to Detour is a new dance performance by Portland-based choreographer Takahiro Yamamoto.

In today’s culturally diverse globalized society, one is inevitably exposed to multiple aesthetics, ethics, and ideologies. This project investigates physical and emotional effects of multiple sets of cultural values and expectations crashing, negotiating, reconciling and/or floating with each other in the contemporary society, from the perspective of Yamamoto’s experience as a queer Japanese immigrant to the US.

Direct Path to Detour is planned to premiere in May 2017 at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) in Portland, Oregon.

In preparation of its presentation at the CAC in fall 2017, Yamamoto and Julian Barnett, one of the dancers in the performance, will visit Cincinnati to work on specific sections of the piece while introducing themselves to the Cincinnati community. On January 26th, a work-in-progress excerpt will be presented, followed by a casual talk-back and discussion. This preliminary discussion at this particular stage of the making process will be integral to the final presentation.

Direct Path to Detour is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (CAC) in partnership with the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) and DiverseWorks (Houston, Texas). The Creation Fund is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Direct Path to Detour is supported by Japan Foundation through the Performing Arts JAPAN program.
