Willie Cole was born in 1955 in Somerville, NJ. He received a BFA in 1976 from The Schools of Visual Arts in New York, NY. Cole has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY (1989); Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1998); Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa, FL (2004); Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University, Ashland, OR (2013); and Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA (2019). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including Prison Sentences: The Prison as Site/The Prison as Subject,Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA (1995); Imagine, You Are Standing Here in Front Of Me, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2002); Represent: 200 Years of African American Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA (2015); and Elements of Vogue.
