Biography

Painter, writer, and galleries William Copley, also known as CPLY, was born in 1919 in New York, NY. He has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at New York Cultural Center, New York, NY (1974); Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands (1980-81); Museum Frieder Burda, Baden Baden, Germany (2012); and Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL (2018). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Exposition Internationale de l’art actuel, Nagaoka Museum, Nagaoka, Japan (1956); Erotic Art, The New Museum, New York, NY (1971); Spiral Village, Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (1997); Liebe, Love, Paare, Gustav-Lübcke Museum, Hamm, Germany (2008); and The Curatorial Imagination of Walter Hopps, The Menil Collection, Houston, TX (2023). Copley died in 1996 in Key West, FL.
