Performance, video and installation artist Vito Acconci was born in 1940 in New York, NY. He received a BA in literature in 1962 from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA and an MFA in literature and poetry in 1964 from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. Acconci has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including Vito Acconci: Domestic Trappings, La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla, CA (1987); Vito Acconci, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1988); Vito Acconci: Acts of Architecture, Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI (2002); and Vito Hannibal Acconci Studio, Stedelijk, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2005). He has also shown in numerous group exhibitions, including Video Time, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2000); Playing Amongst the Ruins, Royal College of Art, London, UK (2001); and Self/City/Sound, Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, Liverpool, UK (2005). Acconci died in 2017 in New York, NY.
