Stephen Irwin was born in 1959 in Vine Grove, KY. He studied at Murray State University. He was the subject of various solo exhibitions, including at the New Center for Contemporary Art, Louisville, KY (2008) and The Speed Museum, Louisville, KY (2011). Irwin participated in many group exhibitions, including White Noise, DePauw University, Greencastle, IN (2008); Kick in the Eye, Vox Populi, Philadelphia, PA (2011); and After the Moment: Reflections on Robert Mapplethorpe, Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (2015). Irwin died in 2010 in Louisville, KY.
