Biography

Sculptor Stephen Antonakos was born in 1926 in Smynos, Greece. He has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including Antonakos: Collages and Assemblages, Miami Museum of Modern Art, Miami, FL (1964); Antonakos: Neon Sculpture, Fort Worth Art Center Museum, Fort Worth, TX (1970); Stephen Antonakos: Meditation Room, Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, Gainesville, FL (1997); Stephen Antonakos: Tessares, New Museum at Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA (2011-12); and Antonakos: Light: Stephen Antonakos and the Russian Avant-Garde, MOMus-Museum Alex Mylona, Athens, Greece (2020).

He has also participated in several group exhibitions, including Human Concern, Personal Torment, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1969); Summer Light, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1981); The Light at the Top of the Chimney, Performing Arts Center, Tel Aviv, Israel (1999); The Mediterranean Experience, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Salonica, Greece (2013); and Bending Light: Neon Art 1965 to Now, Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, NY (2018). Antonakos died in 2013 in New York, NY.
