Stephan Balkenhol was born in 1957 in Frtizlar, Germany. He graduated from Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, Germany in 1982. Balkenhol has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including those at Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland (1991); Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (1995); Museum Küppersmühle für moderne Kunst, Duisburg, Germany (2007); and Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Palais Gogolevski, Moscow, Russia (2016). He has also participated in several group exhibitions, including Hamburg Abroad, European Visual Arts Centre, Ipswich, UK (1991); Photogenic, Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA (2002); Invisibleness is Visibleness, Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, Taipei, Taiwan (2011); and Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy, London, UK (2016). Balkenhol lives and works in Kassel, Germany.
