Situationist International was a movement from 1957 to 1972 that developed in critique of capitalism, drawing inspiration from Marxism and surrealism and led by Guy Debord. Debord's concept of the "society of the spectacle," identified in his book from 1967 of the same name, was key to the tenets of the movements. Members of the movement sought to dissolve the division between artists and consumers in order to make cultural production a part of the everyday.
Letterist International and the International Union for a Pictorial Bauhaus were subsequent groups that formed out of the Situationist International.
