Shimabuku | Contemporary Arts Center

Shimabuku was born in 1969 in Kobe, Japan. He has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including On the water, CAPC Musee d’art contemporain de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France (2011); When Sky was Sea Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, Canada (2014); and Bow to Bow, Barbara Wien, Berlin, Germany (2017). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including Impossible Community, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Mosocow, Russia (2011); The Way Things Go, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA (2015); and VIVA ARTE VIVA, 57th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale de Venezia, Italy (2017).

Shimabuku currently lives and works in Naha, Okinawa.

This exhibition brings together an international coterie of artists and academics that enlist this untamed, “wild” other as partners in the production of art. From Florentine architecture and Mannerist painting to Hollywood film, Japanese anime, and the impossible bodies of video game fantasy, Julien Nguyen builds hybrid histories to pose contemporary queries.
