Sandow Birk was born in 1962 in Detroit, MI. In 1988, he received a BFA in painting from the Otis Art Institute of Parson's School of Design. Birk has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including The Gates of Hell: L.A. Landscapes of the ‘90’s, Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa, CA (1992); Sandow Birk’s Divine Comedy, South Texas Institute for the Arts, Corpus Christi, TX (2006); Sandow Birk: American Qu'ran, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Eugene, OR (2017); and Monumental, Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, CA (2019). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Contemporary Visions of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Downey Museum of Art, Downey, CA (1991); Fact or Fiction: Contemporary Art that Walks the Line, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA (2000); Changing Perspectives of the Western Landscape, Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, NM (2013); and Printmaking in the 21st Century, Detroit Institute for the Arts, Detroit, MI (2023). Birk currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
