Artist Details
Sam Francis was born in 1923 in San Mateo, CA. He received a BA in 1949 and MA in 1950, both from the University of California in Berkeley, CA. Francis has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at the Kunsthalle Bern, Bern, Switzerland (1960-61); Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA (1995); and Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena, CA (2013-14). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including 12 Americans, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1956); Art in Progress, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark (1977); Time & Place: Los Angeles, 1958-1968, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden (2008); and Renard Collection, Fondation Beijeler, Basel, Switzerland (2013). Francis died in 1994 in Santa Monica, CA.
