Russell Crotty was born in 1956 in San Rafael, CA. He received his BFA in 1978 from San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA and his MFA in 1980 from University of California in Irvine, CA. Crotty has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at University of Missouri, St. Louis, MO (1994); La Criee Centre d’Art Contemporain, Rennes, France (2005); and San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose, CA (2016). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Pen and Ink, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA (1994); Mapping of the Self, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2007); Matter and Force, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO (2016); and Drawing Down the Moon, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2022).
