Painter, sculptor, and educator Roy De Forest was born in 1930 in North Platte, NE. He received a BA in 1953 and MA in 1958 from San Francisco State College in San Francisco, CA. De Forest has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA (1969); Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara, CA (1980); Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Pittsburgh, PA (1987); and Oakland Museum of California, Oakland, CA (2017). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Painting and Sculpture Now: Some Contemporary Statements by Artists of the Bay Region, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA (1957); Extraordinary Realities, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1973); Drawings by Painters, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA (1982); One Must Know the Animals, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Madison, WI (2012); and The Incorrect Museum: Vignettes from the di Rosa Collection, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, Napa, CA (2021). De Forest died in 2007 in Port Costa, CA.
