Biography

Sculptor Robert Arneson was born in 1930 in Benicia, CA. He received a BFA in 1954 from California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA and an MFA in 1958 from Mills College in Oakland, CA. Arneson has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including at the De Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco, CA (1962); Lowe Art Museum, Coral Gables, FL (1984); The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, HI (2000-01); and Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University, Stanford, CA (2014-15). He has also participated in several group exhibitions, including Creative Casting, Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York, NY (1963); West Coast Ceramics, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (1979); The Perception of Appearances: A Decade of American Contemporary Figurative Drawing, Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA (2002); Face Value: Portraiture in the Age of Abstraction, Portrait Gallery, Washington DC (2014); and Funk You Too! Humor and Irreverence in Ceramic Sculpture, Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY (2023). Arneson died in 1992 in Benicia, CA.
