Photographer Robert Adams was born in 1937 in City of Orange, NJ. He received a BA in 1959 from University of Redlands, Redlands, CA and PhD from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA (1965). Adams has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including Prairie, Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO (1978); To Make It Home: Photographs of the American West, 1965-1986, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA (1989); Cruel and Tender: The Real in the Twentieth Century Photograph, Tate Modern, London, UK (2003); and American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, NV (2022). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Robert Adams/Emmet Gowin, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1973); Artists in Mid-Career, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA (1986); Perpetual Mirage, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1996); Surface Matters: A Photographic Collection on Ceramics, Mutina for Art, Modena, Italy (2018); and Among the Trees, Hayward Gallery, London (2020). Adams currently lives and works in Astoria, Oregon.
