Artist Details

Biography

Painter Richard Estes was born in 1932 in Kewanee, IL. He graduated in 1956 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL. Estes has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (1974); Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina (1999); and Museum of Art and Design, New York, NY (2015); and Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME (2021). He has also participated in several group exhibitions, including Biennial Exhibition of American Art, Krannert Art Museum, Champaign, IL (1967); Sets, Series, and Suites: Contemporary Prints, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA (2005); American Dream, The National Museum in Krakow, Krakow, Poland (2009); Guggenheim Collection: The American Avant-Garde 1945-1980, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (2012); and The American Dream: American Realism 1945-2017, Drents Museum, Assen, Netherlands; Kunsthalle Emden, Germany (2017). Estes currently lives and works between Maine and New York.
