Photographer Philippe Halsman was born in 1906 in Riga, Latvia. He has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at the Smithsonian Photography Gallery, Washington, DC (1963); Southeast Museum of Photography, Daytona Beach, FL (1993); National Portrait Gallery, London, UK (2001); Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Seoul, Korea (2013-2014); and Morohashi Museum of Modern Art, Fukushima, Japan (2023). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Photographie Contemporaine, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, France (1936); Photos from the Sam Wagstaff Collection, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1978); Photojournalism 1930-70: Recent Gifts to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK (2003); Le Paradis, ou Presque: Los Angeles 1865-2008, Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne,Switzerland (2009); and Proof: Photography in the Era of the Contact Sheet, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH (2020). Halsman died in 1979 in New York, NY.
