Artist Details

Biography

Painter and printmaker Otto Dix was born in 1891 in Utermhaus, Germany. He studied at the Royal Dresden School of Arts and Crafts in Dresden, Germany and the Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, Germany. He has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at Kunstsalon Wolfsberg, Zurich, Switzerland (1938); Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Germany (1985); and Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura, Japan (1988). Dix has also participated in many group exhibitions, including Expressionism: A German Intuition, Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (1980); Schrecken und Hoffnung-Künstler sehen Frieden und Krieg, Kunsthalle Hamburg, Munich, Germany (1987); and Degenerate Art: The Fate of the Avant-Garde in Nazi Germany, Los Angeles County Museum of Art Los Angeles, CA (1991). Dix died in 1969 in Singen, Germany.
