Biography

Newton Harrison was born in 1932 in New York, NY. He received his BFA and MFA from Yale University. He partnered with his wife, Newton, and became major artists of the Ecological Art Movement. They have been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC (1976); Kunstmuseum Bonn, Bonn, Germany (1997); The Regional Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Toulouse, France (2002); Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, CA (2009); and La Jolla Historical Society, Getty Foundation Pacific Standard Time, La Jolla, CA (2024). They have also participated in several group exhibitions, including Earth, Air, Fire, Water: Elements of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA (1971); Collaboration in the 20th Century, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (1983); Multiformity: Multiples from the MCA Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2002); Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN (2016); and Potential Worlds 2: Eco-Fiction, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, Switzerland (2021). Harrison died in 2022 in Santa Cruz, CA.
