Biography

Photographer and activist Nan Goldin was born in 1953 in Washington, DC. She received her BFA in 1977 and Fifth Year Certificate in 1978, both from School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston, MA. Goldin has been the subject of several group exhibitions, including at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (1986); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1996); Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland (2008); Tate Modern, London, UK; El Centro de la Imagen, Mexico City, Mexico (both 2019); and Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL (2020). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Lichtbildnisse – Das Portrat in der Fotografie, Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn, Germany (1982); Desordres, Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris, France (1992); SlideShow, Baltimore Museum of Art, MD; Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (2005); Grand Illusions: Staged Photography from the Met Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY (2015); and Photography: Real and Imagined, The Ian Potter Centre: National Gallery of Victoria, Victoria, Australia (2023). Goldin currently lives and works in New York, NY.
