Multimedia and installation artist Mona Hatoum was born in 1952 in Beirut, Lebanon. She graduated from Beirut University College in 1972, Byam Shaw School of Art in 1979, and Slade School of Fine Art in 1981. Hatoum has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the Nine One One Contemporary Arts Center, Seattle, WA (1986); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France (1994); Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (1998); Tate Britain, London, UK (2000); Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney, Australia (2005); Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar (2014); and Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg, Germany (2023). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Real Time, Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, UK (1985); Distemper: Dissonant Themes in the Art of the 1990s, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (1996); Turning Points: 20th Century British Sculpture, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Iran (2004); Beyond Belief: 100 Years of the Spiritual in Modern Art, Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, CA (2013); and Signals: How Video Transformed the World, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2023). Hatoum currently lives and works in London, UK.
