Printmaker and painter Matsumi Kanemitsu was born 1922 in Ogden, Utah. He studied with Fernand Leger in Paris, France from 1946-1948. He was the subject of many solo exhibitions, including Drawings, Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MA (1954); Drawings, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose, CA (1983); Kanemitsu in California during the 1960s and 1970s, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA (2008); Matsumi Kanemitsu: East/West, Louis Stern Fine Arts, Los Angeles, CA (2018). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including International Drawing Exhibition, Chicago Institute of Art, Chicago, IL (1952); Contemporary Painters and Sculptors as New Printmakers, Museum of Modern Art, New York City, NY (1964); 25 L.A. Painters, Nagoya City Museum, Nagoya, Japan (1981); and Southern California Painting: 1970s Painting Per Se, David Richard Gallery, New York, NY (2011). Kanemitsu died in 1992 in Los Angeles, CA.
