Artist Details
Painter and poet Marsden Hartley was born in 1877 in Lewiston, ME. He attended the Cleveland School of Art and the National Academy of Design. Hartley as been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1944); Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL (1999); and Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, NM (2008). He has also participated in various group exhibitions, including The Window in Twentieth-Century Art, Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX (1987); Dictated by Life, Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis, MN (1995); and Painting in the United States: 1943-1949, Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Greensburg, PA (2008). Hartley died in 1943 in Ellsworth, ME.
