Biography

Marcia Marcus was born in 1928 in New York City, NY. She received a BA in Fine Arts from New York University in 1947, and took additional course work at The Cooper Union from 1950-52. She participated in the fellowship program at MacDowell Colony in 1969 in Peterborough, NH. Marcus’ work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions including Young America 1960: Thirty American Painters Under Thirty-six, a touring exhibition that traveled to the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City, NY, City Art Museum of St. Louis, St. Louis, MO, Columbus Gallery of Fine Art, Columbus, OH and Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (1960-61); Women Artists of America, 1707-1964, Newark Museum, Newark, NJ (1965); Contemporary Portraits, The Museum of Modern Art, New York City, NY (1968); The Portrait in Contemporary Art, Speed Art Museum, Louisville, KY; Painting and Sculpture Today, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN (1978), and Face Value: Portraiture in the Age of Abstraction, National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. (2014). Her work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions including at the Delancey Street Museum, New York, NY (1960); Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Providence, RI (1966); Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY (1975), Cedar Rapids Art Center, Cedar, IA (1980) and Canton Art Institute, Canton, OH (1984). Marcus currently lives in New York City, NY.
