Maria Fernanda Cardoso was born in 1963 in Bogotá, Colombia. She received a BFA in 1985 from Universidad de Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia; an MFA in Sculpture in 1990 from Yale University, New Haven, CT; and a PhD in 2012 from Sydney College for the Arts in Sydney, Australia. She has been the subject of many solo exhibitions and performances, including at San Francisco Art Space, San Francisco, CA (1992); The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY (1998); Chelsea Art Museum, New York, NY (2006); and Frankston Arts Centre, Frankston, Australia (2022). Cardoso has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Salon de Arte Joven, Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertulia, Cali, Colombia (1985); Modern Starts: People, Places, Things, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1999-2000); New Media/New Materials: Highlights in Contemporary Art, The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia, PA and Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (2007); and Alter Natura, Museo de Arte de Pereira, Pereira, Colombia (2023). Cardoso currently lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
