Biography

Painter Leon Golub was born in 1922 in Chicago, IL. He received a BA from the University of Chicago in 1942, then his BFA and MFA in 1949 and 1950 from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Golub has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at The Institute of Contemporary Art, London, UK (1957); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (1974); The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1984); Stedelijk Museum vor Actuele Kunst, Ghent, Belgium (2000); and National Portrait Gallery, London, UK (2016). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Younger American Painters, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (1954); Koffler Foundation Collection, National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC (1979) Parallel Visions: Modern Artists & Outsider Art, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain (1992); A Chronicle of Interventions, Tate Modern, London, UK (2014); and Fast Forward: Painting from the 1980s, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2017). Golub died in 2004 in New York, NY.
