Katsura Funakoshi was born in 1951 in Iwate, Japan. He received a BA in 1975 from Tokyo Zokei University and an MA in 1977 from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Funakoshi has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura, Japan (1993); Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan (2004); Kami City Art Museum, Kochi, Japan (2011); and Mie Prefectural Art Museum, Tsu, Japan (2016). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Against Nature: Japanese Art in the Eighties, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA (1989); Kunst des 20, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany (1997); Dramatic Collections, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sapporo, Japan (2007); and Sekai no meiga to deau – Picasso, Matisse, Warhol no hanga kara, The Museum of Modern Art, Shiga, Japan (2014). Funakoshi currently lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.
