Painter, poet, and sculptor Christiaan Karel Appel, known professionally as Karel Appel, was born in 1921 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He graduated from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1943 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Appel has been the subject of multiple solo exhibitions, including Paintings, Institute of Contemporary Art, London, UK (1957); Reliefs 1966-68, Centre National d'Art Contemporain, Paris, France (1968); Oeuvres récentes, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Belgium (1984); Pastorale Chiaroscuro, Stedelijk Museum, The Amsterdam, Netherlands (2001); and Art as Celebration!, Musée d'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (2017). He has also participated in several group exhibitions, including Younger European Painters. A Selection, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (1953); Creation, Modern Art and Nature, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Scotland (1984); De Miró à Warhol. La collection Berardo à Paris, Musée du Luxembourg, Paris, France (2008); and Find a Face, Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH (2017).Appel died in 2006 in Zürich, Switzerland.
