John Carlton Atherton was born in 1900 in Brainerd, MN. He studied at the College of the Pacific, Stockton, CA and San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA. His work is in the public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; De Young Museum, San Francisco, CA; and Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC. Atherton died in 1952 in New Brunswick, Canada.
