Artist Details

Biography

John Bankston was born in 1963 in Benton Harbor, MI. He received a BFA in 1989 from Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Madison, ME and MFA in Painting in 1990 from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL. Bankston has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including John Bankston: Locating Desire, de Young Museum, San Francisco, CA (2006); John Bankston: Magic at Hand, Raum Zwei, Leipzig, Germany (2012); and John Bankston: Painting As Storytelling, Coulter Art Gallery at Stanford University, Stanford, CA (2021). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including A Part of the Whole, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL (1989); Freestyle, The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY and Santa Monica Museum, Santa Monica, CA (2001); 30 Americans, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, OH (2016); and In This Together, Embracing Diversity, Castelli Art Space, Los Angeles, CA (2018). Bankston currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
