Biography

Conceptual artist John Baldessari was born in 1931 in National City, CA. He received a BA in 1953 and an MFA in 1957 in Painting, both from San Diego State College in San Diego, CA. Baldessari has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at Art Center in La Jolla, La Jolla, CA (1960); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1978); Museo d’Arte Moderna Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto. Trento, Italy (2000); Garage Center for Contemporary Culture. Moscow, Russia (2013); and Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden (2020). Baldessari has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Los Angeles: Selections from the Art Lending Service, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1976); Beyond Geometry: Experiments in Form, 1940s–70s, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA (2004); and The Printer's Proof: Artist and Printer Collaborations, Albuquerque Museum, Albuquerque, NM (2022). Baldessari died in 2020 in Los Angeles, CA.
