Biography

Jo Baer was born in 1929 in Seattle, WA. She graduated from University of Washington, Seattle, WA in 1949 and from the New School for Social Research, New York, NY in 1953. Baer has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including Jo Baer, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1975); Jo Baer, Paintings 1960 - 1998 / Schilderijen 1969 - 1998, Stedelijk Museum, The Amsterdam (1999); and Jo Baer. Towards the Land of the Giants, Camden Arts Centre, London, UK (2015). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Systemic Painting, Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (1966); Collection Next-the-Sea, Haags Gemeente Museum, The Hague, The Netherlands (1988); Specific Objects: the Minimalist Influence, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA (2004); and Making Space: Women Artists and Postwar Abstraction, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2017). Baer currently lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
