Biography

Sculptor and painter Jean Dubuffet was born in 1901 in Le Havre, France. In 1918 he graduated from the Académie Julien in Paris, France. Dubuffet has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, UK (1955); Walraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, Germany (1980); The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan (1993); The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2014); and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Bilbao, Spain (2022). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Some Contemporary Works of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH (1958); San Lazzaro et ses amis, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France (1976); The Robert and Jane Meyerhoff Collection: Selected Works, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (2009-10); and Dubuffet and Villegle Exhibition, Seoul Olympic Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea (2022). Dubuffet died in 1985 in Paris, France.
