Performance artist James Lee Byars was born in 1932 in Detroit, MI. He has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1958); Musée de Louvre, Paris, France (1975); Neues Museum Weserburg, Bremen, Germany (1995); and Red Brick Art Museum, Beijing, China (2021). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including Choices: Making an Art of Everyday Life, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY (1986); The Museum of our Wishes, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany (2001); Doors of Perception: American Art and Asia, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (2009); and Secret Wing, Timișoara National Art Museum, Timișoara, Romania (2021). Byars died in 1997 in Cairo, Egypt.
