Jack Beal was born in 1931 in Richmond, VA. He studied at College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA (1950-53); University of Chicago in Chicago, IL (1955-56); and The Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL (1953-56). Beal has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including Jack Beal: Retrospective, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA (1973-74); Jack Beal: A Survey from 1963-1994, Oglethorpe University Museum, Atlanta, GA (1998); and Abstract Expressionism and the New American Realism: Paintings by Jack Beal and Philip Pearlstein, The Columbus Museum, Columbus, GA (2001). He has also participated in many group exhibitions, including Untitled: 1968, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA (1968); Focus on the Figure: Twenty Years, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1982); The Figure: Another Side of Modernism, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Staten Island, NY (2000-2001); and Visionary: The Cumming Family Collection, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC (2020-21). Beal died in 2013 in Oneonta, NY.
