Biography

Multidisciplinary artist Houston Conwill was born in 1947 in Louisville, KY. He graduated in 1973 from Howard University, Washington, DC and received an MA from University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. He has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at Alternative Museum, New York, NY (1986); and Hirshhorn WORKS 89: Daniel Buren, Buster Simpson, Houston Conwill, Matt Mullican / Sidney Lawrence, Ned Rifkin, and Phyllis Rosenzweig, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (both 1990). Conwill has been included in various group exhibitions, including Easter Shout!, MoMA PS1, New York, NY (1981); The Decade Show: Frameworks of Identity in the 1980s, New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY; Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art, New York, NY; and Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY (1990); and Now Dig This! Art and Black, Los Angeles 1960–1980, MOMA PS1, New York, NY (2013). Conwill died in 2016 in The Bronx, NY.
