Bernd Becher was fern in 1931 in the Siegen District, Germany. He attended the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart and Düsseldorf, Germany. Hilla Becher was born in 1934 in Potsdam, Germany. She studied at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf, Germany. In 1959 they began an artist collaboration together. They have been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including Bernd and Hilla Becher, German Mining Museum, Bochum, Germany (1967); Bernd and Hilla Becher, Musée d’Art Moderne, Liege, Belgium (1985); Häuser, Centre de la photographie, Geneva, Switzerland (2001); and Bernd & Hilla Becher, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY (2022). Bernd and Hilla Becher have also participated in several group exhibitions, including Voilá- Le monde dans la tete, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France (2000); German Photography, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Boston, MA (2007); and Scratching the Surface, Hambruger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin, Germany (2021). Bernd died in 2007 in Rostock, Germany. Hilla died in 2015 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
