Multidisciplinary Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer was born in 1900 in Haag am Hausruck, Austria. He attended the Bauhaus from 1921-23 and 1935-28 in Weimar and Dessau, Germany. Bayer has been featured in many solo exhibitions, with recent shows including Visual Alphabet: Herbert Bayer's Anthology Paintings, Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO (2010); The Visionary Photomontages of Herbert Bayer, 1929-1936, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, CA (2015); and Herbert Bayer: Bauhaus Master, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institute, New York, NY (2019-20). He has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions, with recent ones including The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2010); RealSurreal: Masterpieces of Avant-Garde Photography, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg, Germany (2015); The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection, Tate Modern, London, UK (2016-17); and Herbert & Joella Bayer: Joining Forces in the Service of Art, Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz, Linz, Austria (2022-23). Bayer died in 1985 in Montecito, CA.
