Biography

Helen Mayer Harrison was born in 1927 in New York, NY. She received a BA in English from Queens College is 1948 and an MA in Education from New York University. She partnered with her husband, Newton, and became major artists of the Ecological Art Movement. They have been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC (1976); Kunstmuseum Bonn, Bonn, Germany (1997); The Regional Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Toulouse, France (2002); Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, CA (2009); and La Jolla Historical Society, Getty Foundation Pacific Standard Time, La Jolla, CA (2024). They have also participated in several group exhibitions, including Earth, Air, Fire, Water: Elements of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA (1971); Collaboration in the 20th Century, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (1983); Multiformity: Multiples from the MCA Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2002); Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN (2016); and Potential Worlds 2: Eco-Fiction, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, Switzerland (2021). Harrison died in 2018 in Santa Cruz, CA.
